Dublin, Ireland | Neoclassical / Contemporary Classical / Ambient
From heavy machinery to delicate melodies, an unconventional journey through music, memory and melancholy.
Meet Gav Moran

Some composers find inspiration in the world around them. Others create entire worlds of their own.
For Gav Moran, music is about transporting listeners somewhere beyond the everyday, using delicate piano melodies, expressive orchestration and cinematic soundscapes to tell stories without words.
Based in Dublin, Ireland, Gav is an award-winning composer and producer whose work occupies the space between neoclassical minimalism, contemporary classical music and atmospheric electronic composition.
But the journey that brought him here has been anything but predictable.
Growing up in a musical Dublin household, where his father was a singer and records by artists ranging from Elvis Presley to The Beatles were rarely far from the turntable, Gav developed an early fascination with sound.
He began studying piano as a child, completing his first examination at just eight years old. The music of Baroque and Romantic composers helped shape his understanding of melody, repetition and musical structure.
However, his early production career took a rather different direction. Before embracing neoclassical composition, Gav spent years creating electronic dance music, developing the technical skills and experimental instincts that would eventually find their way into his orchestral work.
And somewhere along that unconventional journey, he even found himself working in Russia as a heavy plant mechanic.
It's an unusual background for a composer specialising in delicate, melancholic piano music, but perhaps that's part of what makes his creative perspective so interesting.
Why We're Listening
There's something particularly compelling about instrumental music that can communicate an entire story without a single lyric.
Gav Moran approaches composition with precisely that ambition.
His music draws upon the emotional intimacy of solo piano, the expressive possibilities of strings and the atmospheric textures of contemporary electronic production.
Rather than treating melancholy simply as sadness, Gav sees it as something beautiful: an opportunity for reflection, imagination and emotional connection.
The result is music conceived as a journey, allowing listeners to bring their own memories, experiences and interpretations to the sounds unfolding around them.
What particularly interests us is how Gav bridges apparently contrasting musical worlds, combining traditional compositional influences with modern synthesis, cinematic storytelling and a producer's fascination with sound.
It's an approach that demonstrates how contemporary classical music can embrace experimentation without sacrificing emotional immediacy.
Broken Pieces: Finding Beauty in Melancholy
Released in May 2023 through Blue Spiral Records, Gav's debut album, Broken Pieces, established the foundations of his neoclassical identity.
Created over approximately two years, beginning during the pandemic, the album brings together nine compositions built around intimate piano performances, expressive strings and atmospheric production.
Moving between melancholy, reflection and moments of optimism, the collection invites listeners into a series of imagined emotional landscapes.
For Gav, the creative process was an exploration of imperfection and the beauty that can emerge from it.
Some compositions developed naturally over just a few days, while others required weeks or months of patient refinement, particularly when shaping their orchestral arrangements.
The album attracted international attention, with radio broadcasts reportedly reaching more than 40 countries during its first month of release. Chile's Beethoven FM also dedicated a special programme to the recording.
For a composer whose ambition is to create meaningful emotional experiences through instrumental music, the response represented an encouraging beginning.
Requiem: Music Through Loss and Acceptance
In 2025, Gav explored more personal emotional territory with the release of his EP, Requiem.
Inspired by the death of a friend, the project examines the complex journey through grief, from the initial shock of loss to the gradual emergence of acceptance.
Across five tracks, piano, strings and ambient textures trace an emotional progression through sorrow, reflection and the lasting changes that follow significant loss.
Rather than attempting to provide answers, the music offers space for listeners to explore their own experiences.
It's an approach closely aligned with Gav's belief that the listener's interpretation can be just as meaningful as the composer's original intention.
The EP represents a particularly moving example of his ability to transform deeply personal experiences into instrumental storytelling.
Where Classical Tradition Meets Modern Technology
Gav's studio provides another fascinating insight into his approach to composition.
At its centre sits a 150-year-old upright piano, an instrument whose aged character and history hold particular appeal for the composer.
Alongside it, modern synthesizers from manufacturers including Arturia and Moog provide an entirely different palette of sonic possibilities.
For Gav, these worlds aren't in competition.
The organic qualities of acoustic instruments and the evolving textures of electronic synthesis can complement one another, creating musical environments that feel both timeless and contemporary.
His fascination with cinematic storytelling was also profoundly influenced by the 2016 film Arrival, particularly the relationship between its music and imagery.
That experience helped reinforce his ambition to create compositions that suggest an unfolding narrative, even when no visual accompaniment exists.
It's a philosophy that also led him into film scoring, including the soundtrack for Armonia, a short film shortlisted in the Y40 film competition.

Beyond Composition: Supporting Neoclassical Music
Gav's involvement in music extends beyond his own recordings.
As a co-founder of a neoclassical record label, he is also involved in the wider creative infrastructure supporting contemporary instrumental music.
It's a natural extension of his journey from electronic music production to contemporary classical composition, reflecting an interest not just in making music but in helping the genre develop.
With live performances in Paris also being planned, Gav continues to explore opportunities to bring his compositions beyond the recording studio and into new performance settings.
In His Own Words
Reflecting on what he hopes listeners take from his music, Gav explained in an interview with Illustrate Magazine:
“For me music is all about story telling.”
He believes that audiences should be free to find their own meaning in instrumental music, even when their interpretation differs from the story that inspired its creation.
That philosophy captures something fundamental about his work.
From antique piano keys to contemporary electronic soundscapes, Gav Moran's music is ultimately concerned with the relationship between sound, imagination and human emotion.
And for someone whose journey has taken him from repairing heavy machinery in Russia to creating award-winning neoclassical compositions, it's a reminder that the most interesting artistic stories rarely follow a conventional path.
